Spirit of Mission: a retreat in the city (Bristol)

A day retreat in the city hosted by CMS Spirit of Mission with Trinity College Bristol.

Nurturing spirituality for mission

In a demanding world how can we be sustained and encouraged in Jesus' mission? Love for God and love for neighbour are at the heart of mission, and can only be sustained in holy encounter.

This day in will be an opportunity to experience and reflect together on practices of prayer and attentiveness that may open us more deeply to God's presence.

Together we'll pray with words, explore into silence, and give attention to the gifts of scripture and season. And so, perhaps in some way restored and renewed, to play our part once again in bringing God's healing to all creation.

Further details

The retreat is free, but a donation towards the costs of the day would be appreciated. Tea and coffee is provided – please bring your own lunch or purchase locally.

To book your free place, please contact Linda Sammons on linda.sammons@cms-uk.org or 01865 787482.

The Dock – Sep15

Chaplain Chris Bennett gives the latest news on The Dock, Belfast.

We have seen amazing growth in many ways but there's no doubt that The Tall Ships festival in Belfast in July certainly put us to the test. It was, in every way, a big event. Fifty ships, 50,000 visitors and, over four days, the Dock Café served 5,510 customers!

We've also just celebrated another milestone in that we have filled a complete Visitors' Book in Dock Café. It may not sound like much but, when we opened in 2012, we commissioned some lovely leather-bound visitors' – books though it seemed impossible that we would ever run out of space. Hundreds of pages, eight entries per page… there would never be that many customers through our doors, would there?

The first entries are back in the days when the amount of customers in an entire day might be less than we now have waiting outside when we open the door in the morning! But looking through the completed book now – it does the heart good to see the multinational, multicultural, multiplicity of people who have signed their name and home and comment on every page of the book.

The Dock - visitors' book

Page after page after page tells a story of visitors finding a welcome, wanderers finding a home, individuals finding friendship, busy people finding peace, stressed people finding space, sorrowful people finding a smile, sceptical people finding faith (or sometimes just some experience of God, or grace, or something divine that they can't quite put their finger on…)

The Dock charity is made up of a number of things: café, art gallery, museum and, of course, church – a church which continues to involve a team of dedicated volunteers and chaplains from across all church backgrounds, both Protestant and Catholic, who are committed to sharing every step of the journey of building community in this new part of Belfast.

We also have a prayer garden where people can rest and reflect, or talk to one of our Prayer Team. It's a little oasis of greenery and peace in the corner of The Dock Café and is open during Café hours; providing a space to reflect, read from our library of books, and maybe write a prayer and post it on the wall or in the prayer journal.

The Dock - tea

Our Sunday Nights at The Dock church gatherings are an opportunity to meet The Dock team, neighbours, supporters and newcomers; to worship, share new insights, celebrate good news and to pray for Belfast and each another. Taking place in The Dock Café on the first Sunday of every month from 6pm, there's plenty of time to chat, enjoy a drink of tea or coffee and receive prayer. These services do not 'belong' to any one denomination and we welcome everyone, of every tradition and background – which was the Dock vision from the very start.

Reflecting on what has happened in The Dock so far makes me realise what a tremendous journey we've been on… including Dock Walks, Titanic commemorations, opening Titanic Belfast, the formation of café itself in the early days with just a handful of volunteers and customers, and then the explosive growth of our beloved cafe/church/community home-away-from-home.

The Dock - outdoor seating

It is breath-taking to realise how much life and joy and transformation have been packed into a few short years in this wonderful place.

The Dock is an ethos, a momentum, a vision to build life in the Titanic Quarter. Under that umbrella, countless expressions of that life can grow, flourish, multiply, propagate. Some (most?) will be temporary, in the right place at the right time. But through it all, we’ll try to stay light on our feet; we’re not here to build a cathedral, an edifice or institution. We’re here to live.

It is suggested that the group fee might be covered (at least in part) by your church, whilst you cover the individual fee.

There is a 15% discount on the group fee available for any group who registers and pays a non-returnable deposit of £150 by 30th June 2015, reducing the group fee to £250.

Example: a group of four people registering after June would pay £295 + (4 x £35) = £435, or £108.75 each.

Example: a group of two people registering before the end of June would pay £250 + (2 x £35) = £320, or £160 each.

Pioneering a New Future: a guide to shaping change and changing the shape of church

Is your church considering change or working through change?

In this revised edition of The Challenge of Change, Phil Potter explains ways of shaping change of any kind in the life of a church and presents a guide to understanding the changing shape of church, with particular reference to the fresh expressions of church which are now prevalent across the UK and beyond.

Phil uses his experiences of leading congregations through transition periods, drawing on his own mistakes and personal stories as examples to illustrate his points. He speaks to the concerns of reluctant traditionalists and impatient visionaries, to both struggling and thriving congregations.

Pioneering a New Future is ideal for church leaders of any denomination wanting to take their congregations through change. It is also ideal for church members preparing to embark on a particular project, or simply wanting to be equipped for whatever lies ahead.

The book also includes questions for personal and group reflection.

Phil has done the church a service in writing this book. Drawing on his experience as a vicar who oversaw local renewal, as a practitioner, instigator and inspirer, he sets out his passion as Archbishop's Missioner and leader of Fresh Expressions. Phil has proved himself to be an effective change broker – and there is wisdom and insight here, practical guidelines and accessible advice. I hope, pray and trust this book will be a great stimulus and agent of change for many called to lead communities into transformation.

Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury

Phil Potter has proved in his ministry that lasting change comes through clear, compelling values. His work on change draws on wide wisdom, real life and healthy, holy dissatisfaction.

George Lings, Church Army Research Team

An excellent guidebook for a congregation serious about change and mission.

Steven Croft, Bishop of Sheffield

This excellent book is the fruit of hard-won lessons in leadership and change. Whether you are involved in an inherited model of church, in fresh expressions of church, or in both, you will find help here.

Bishop Graham Cray

From Margins to Mainstream: the Anglican Fresh Expressions Conference

You are invited to the 2015 Anglican Fresh Expressions Conference, From Margins to Mainstream, hosted by the Diocese of Southwark and the national Fresh Expressions team.

The conference title, From Margins to Mainstream, summarises our hope that the Church across the UK would move from simply allow fresh expressions of church to happen on the fringes, to embedding fresh expressions of church at every level of diocesan strategy and church life.

The conference features a team of inspiring speakers from the UK and overseas, including Paul Bayes, Karen Ward, Dave Male, Michael Moynagh, Anna Norman-Walker, George Lings, Ric Thorpe and Richard White.

There will be keynote addresses and practical seminars to choose from, and a message from the Archbishop of Canterbury. This conference will give you new skills and renewed passion for the work of creative mission in your own context.

The Pursuit: Into the Wild

The Pursuit is a four-day, 24-7 worship, prayer, community and justice gathering. It's a weekend gaining a taste for eternity. A place to retreat and experience a raw and authentic encounter with God.

The Pursuit isn't a conference, it's a gathering. A community. A collective. A generation uniting to engage with God and be sent as Kingdom-bringers. It will be a place to belly laugh, cry, groan, lament and respond… possibly all at the same time.

You're involved: you get to add to, and join in, the fun. We're inviting those coming along to bring their instruments and join one of our campfire worship spots. There will alsbe space to busk and a place for you to bring your paints and pencils to create your own art in worship.

From the the moment we start the worship will be 24/4 (imagine 24/7 but only 4 days). Some moments we will be led by a full band, others by a local individual. The big deal is this, you can come and go for as long or short a time as you like. This is about creating space to pursue God and rest in his presence.

We are doing away with the aim to be perfect, instead we create space that is honest, real and authentic. We're not searching out the 'big names', although we recognise people only become known because God is moving through them, but we want grass roots, raw, people to inspire us – both young and old.

We have a strong focus on community life so our accommodation is less 'hotel' and more 'family''. You can book and pay per person and then tell us your sharing preferences for rooms and apartments. There are single rooms, twin rooms and a few triples, all grouped around shared bathroom facilities. If you want to meet new people, just leave the sharing preferences blank and we'll introduce you to others of the same gender. There's a dining hall where we can eat together, chat, laugh and encourage each other. There will also be a café and a bar to relax and make new friends.

Our speakers will be real people doing 'the stuff'. Think you have a story to tell? Then maybe you could share… Short, sharp talks – There's a venue where people will get to share their 12 minute idea, dream, vision or experience. Imagine a place high on passion, where local church stories, encouragement and inspiration can spread, be engaged with, and then taken home to impact your world. When there are talks we expect heckling. Dialogue is encouraged.

We're not going to be spending large sums of money on the worship venue. It's going to be fun, quirky and stripped back so that the focus is on the very thing we want to focus upon… Jesus. That spurs us into faith in action. We want to make all the links between worship, justice, and kingdom living. We desire to see action put to faith.

Cost and booking

Weekend tickets are £150 (or £180 with a donation), £125 for students/unwaged, £80 for children under 14. Day tickets are available for £35 (Sat or Sun) and £15 (Fri or Mon).

For more information or to book, please visit The Pursuit website.
