The Lord’s Prayer

What is this and why is it helpful?

The prayer that Jesus taught all his disciples to pray is known as 'the Lord's Prayer' and it appears in two forms: firstly in the Gospel of Matthew as part of a discussion about not appearing to be over pompous and grandiose in our approaches to God, and secondly, in the Gospel of Luke which records Jesus being approached by one of his disciples with a request to teach them to pray as John (the Baptist) taught his disciples.

Sharing in the Lord's Prayer together is in itself participatory. All efforts should be made not just to 'rattle it off', but to take one's time with it, allow each stanza of the prayer to search us and then for us to respond.
